Transportation on the Island
If you are staying at the western end of Roatan, taxis and public buses are available for getting around. However, vacationers who are staying east of French Harbour are advised to rent a car during their stay. Keep in mind that roads can be quite narrow. On public buses, you need to pay the fare as you exit the bus. Taxi fares are per person, but be ready to share a taxi with other vacationers.
Currency in Roatan
The currency in Honduras is the Lempira. U.S. Dollars are also accepted and there are several ATM’s on Roatan including banks in West End, Coxen Hole, and French Harbour. There is also an ATM at the Roatan airport. Most hotels accept payments with credit cards and via Pay Pal. However, smaller establishments sometimes add a surcharge when you pay with a credit card. You should always have small bills when making transactions at street vendors, bars, or mini-marts.
