Named after the former president of Honduras Manuel Gálvez, Roatan International Airport is located right next to the Coxen Hole town on the western side of the island. It was opened in 1995 and today offers both domestic and International flights. The annual numbers of flights are constantly rising and there are many airline connections with cities in the US including Miami, Atlanta, Houston, Dallas, and New York.
An interesting story is that this is not the first airport on this site. It was in 1964 when the first airplane landed at the airport. The track was kind of short and there were only domestic flights available. The most popular flight was from La Ceiba to Roatan.
Nowadays, Roatan Airport is a modern airport that features a duty shop and two café/bars. One is located at the check in and the other one can be found in the transit area. Taxi services to nearby villages on the island are available and rental vehicle companies including Avis, Hertz, Thrifty, Alamo, Budget reside at the airport.
Some of the existing airport facilities were upgraded during the renovations in 2013. The check-in area was expanded, as well as the larger waiting area where passengers will find a small café and a sitting area. The expansion also included security and customs areas. There are even more plans for renovations related to the car park at the airport and to the drop-off and pick-up areas.
