Honduran Seafood Soup is one of the most popular national dishes in Honduras and everyone seems to like it. What makes it different from other seafood soups is the coconut milk, an ingredient that is not that common in similar soups. The recipe is passed from one generation to the other and the locals are very proud of this authentic Honduran dish. Of course, everyone will tell you how their version of the Honduran Seafood Soup is the best, and every other home has that secret ingredient that makes the dish special and unique. Here is the standard recipe that you should follow in order to prepare this delicious Honduran seafood specialty.
The first thing you need to do is clean the crabs and hit them hard with a hammer so that the flavor soaks up.
Place the crabs inside a large stock pot together with the margarine. Now, you can add some green peppers, onions, tomatoes, parsley, cilantro, and one cube of chicken bullion. You can also add some spices and put it all on low heat.
Move and mix the crabs a bit and pour some hot water (not too much, between one-third to one-one half the size of the pot). Keep mixing and don’t forget to add a bit of salt.
Add one more cube of chicken bullion, the shrimp bullion, and a bit of Worcestershire Sauce. For that perfect Honduran Seafood Soup color, add the achiote powder.
Next step is to peel the chayote and cut them into slices and then into chunks. Keep in mind that the seed needs to be taken out of the middle. Add it to the soup now.
Take the three yuccas, peel them and cut them into round pieces (The proper way to clean them is to cut the red and hairy part, and peel it until there is no casing left) add yuccas to the soup.
The next thing you should do is take the plantain, skin them and wash them. Cut each into 5 chunks and add to the soup.
Now you can relax a bit and let it all boil until the vegetables are cooked.
Fish and shrimp come next, so add both into the soup.
In the end, add coconut milk, a bit of sugar, and some conch.
The soup is almost done. Relax and allow the soup to simmer for not less than 20 min. The soup can be with served with avocado, lime, and rice. You can also serve it with tortillas.
