Friendly Expat Community

There is an established expat community here in Roatan. In case you have just recently moved here, most of the expats are willing to provide necessary information about life on the island. There are all kinds of gatherings and social events. Adjusting to the life on the island is easy since there are several bilingual schools and several modern supermarkets.

The Weather in Roatan is perfect

Besides lush forests and pristine beaches with amazing sunset views, Roatan is also well-known for its pleasant climate. The average temperate here is around 28°C, while the highest can be 31° C. There is really no need for any warm clothes, only a light hoodie or a jacket. Keep in mind that the rainy seasons last from approx September to December.

Roatan is not overcrowded

There are many beautiful islands all over the world, but unfortunately, some of them are overcrowded with tourists, expats, and all kinds of other travelers. Luckily, this is not a case in Roatan. The good news is that the prices are budget friendly and many expats wish that it can stay like this for a long time.

Roatan is great for Diving

Many people who come to live in Roatan love the laid-back atmosphere and the peacefulness, but there are others who like the adrenaline and water activities. Scuba diving is one of the most popular water activities on the island and there are many shops where you can rent or purchase the necessary equipment. You will find many dive sites in all parts of the island including one of the largest coral reef systems in the world. Expect to see a variety of marine life such as sea turtles, whales, and dolphins.

General Information about Roatan

Coxen Hole is the largest town on the island and there you will find all the government offices, cruise ship docks, and the airport. There are not a lot of expats in Coxen Hole since most of them prefer to live in more relaxed parts of Roatan. The French Harbour of Roatan features dozens of shopping centers, grocery shops, and banks, while Punta Gorda features the largest population of Garifuna people who are connected to their African heritage. It is the west end of Roatan that is popular among both tourists and expats. In West End Village; you will find many dive centers, restaurants, and bars. The nightlife is amazing and there are many people who go out to listen to live music. Those who prefer peace and quiet should definitely head out to the east end of Roatan which is perfect for snorkeling, sunbathing and just relaxing.
