I always use Cactus Juice, now available with sunscreen, it costs around $10 on the island. What ever you do, always use your stuff. Do not lay directly on the sand. I have seen people with dozens of bites, I assume fools who did not head the warnings.

The trick is to keep yourself greasy. The little nasties can't latch
on then. I don't like to use deet and found that cactus juice worked
best, as long as I applied it regularly. Once when I forgot my cactus
juice I got some vegetable oil (unused of course) from a friend who
worked in the kitchen where I was. It worked. Mind you this was after
I had been on island for a while. The real test would have been
trying this my first month, when they were really making my life
    wretched.
I never did find a way to stop the itch after the fact.
